One of the evidences of the miraculous nature (iʿjāz) of the Qur'an is its prophecies, among which the report mentioned in verses two to four of Sūrat al-Rūm stands as one of the most prominent instances. These verses refer to the victory of the Romans over the Persians—or, according to another possibility, the defeat of the Romans at the hands of the Muslims—along with an indication of the approximate time of its occurrence. Some writers have raised objections against the miraculous character of this report of the unseen. The present study, aiming to elucidate and substantiate this prophecy and to respond to the aforementioned objections, has—through an analytical-critical method—reached the conclusion that the very truthfulness of the "prophecy" in these verses is free of ambiguity, whether they were revealed in Mecca or in Medina. Moreover, since the Qur'an contains various reports about the future that have been accurately fulfilled, the realization of the Qur'an's prophecies cannot be regarded as coincidental. Rather, the source of the Noble Prophet's (peace be upon him) knowledge of the future in general, and of the report of the victory of the Romans or the Muslims in particular, is his connection with the world of the unseen and the celestial realm (malakūt). Furthermore, any prophecy accompanied—prior to or concurrent with it—by a claim to prophethood constitutes, by virtue of divine wisdom and the reprehensibility of leading servants astray, a sign of the truthfulness of the claimant to prophethood.
